College

Yay! I finally made contact with the college guy!!!! I’ve called him three times and emailed him and he finally responded. To be fair, the headset wasn’t registering on my computer and the one time he answered the phone he couldn’t hear me and when I called my mom to test it out, she couldn’t hear me, either, so the messages I was leaving him probably weren’t registering anything. But, he emailed me back this morning (afternoon for him) and we’re working out my class schedule. I have 15 credits worth of classes picked out. Here is the original list I sent him:

  • CIS 1200      Computer Literacy
  • ENGL 1010  Intro to Writing
  • ENGL 2010  Intermediate Writing
  • LIB 1010      Information Literacy
  • HIST 1700    American Civilization
  • CHEM 1010  Intro to Chemistry (took this one 7 years ago and might not need to retake it)
    or
  • NFS 1020      Sci Foundations of Nutrition

The only response he had to the class list was to tell me he was entering them and that I couldn’t do ENGL 1010 and ENGL 2010 at the same time. So, I don’t know whether I’m taking a chemistry class or a nutrition class. Either is fine. I really enjoyed chemistry in high school and in college. I also really enjoyed physics in college. That was a fun class. Too bad I have to take lab courses with physics. That makes it so I can’t do it as an online class. Intro to Chemistry is the only chemistry class I can take online because it doesn’t require a lab course. Oh well. I’ll be back in the US eventually and can take those classes.

Since I can’t take ENGL 2010 until I complete ENGL 1010 (i had thought that might be a possibility, but figured I might as well try since there are several classes I can do concurrently), I told him I’d like to do COMM 1010 Elements of Effective Communication.

There are a bunch of classes to do online, but I’m not interested in most of them or I need to be in a specific program to do them. There are travel classes, keyboarding classes, psychology and sociology classes as well as several medical/dental classes. There are also several classes that have pre-requisites, so that crosses those off. I took a sociology and a psychology class in high school and was bored out of my mind in both of them, which makes not a good choice for me. Keyboarding just seems like a fluff class and is only worth one credit, so I don’t want to waste my time on that. I’m not in the medical or dental programs, so that knocks those classes out.

So, pretty much, that leaves business (one), communications (six) and micro economics classes (one). Business classes aren’t so bad, but I figure a communications class might be beneficial for me since I’m not so great at the whole ‘talking in front of groups’ and ‘talking to people I don’t know very well’ thing. College is about learning and improving ourselves, so this seems like a good class to take. Part of me is laughing because the thought running through my head right now is: “Thank goodness this is an online class and doesn’t involve any actual public speaking.” lol.

So, as of right now, the classes I applied to take online are:

  • CIS 1200      Computer Literacy
  • ENGL 1010   Intro to Writing
  • LIB 1010       Information Literacy
  • HIST 1700    American Civilization
  • COMM 1010 Elements of Effective Communication
  • CHEM 1010  Intro to Chemistry (took this one 7 years ago and might not need to retake it)
    or
  • NFS 1020      Sci Foundations of Nutrition

I’m pretty nervous because it’s been 7 years since I last went to school. I feel so old. Oh well. I guess new is the best time to start taking steps to bettering my future. I’ve got a great set-up of not having to work, so I can devote as much time as I need to to my classes. Troy said we can hire a maid to do most or all of the housework once I start school (he actually said we could get one now, but I am fine taking care of the house at the moment), so that is another mark in the ‘this is the perfect time and opportunity to finish school’ column. Another huge mark in that column is that Troy is super supportive and encouraging about me going back to school. He’s been encouraging me to go back pretty much since the day we met. I’ve shared with him all of my fears and insecurities about going back to school and he’s been so wonderful about it. Even when I was crying and telling him I’m not smart enough to go back to school and that I will just fail at it, he was so sweet and kind. He has never given up reminding me that this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and every time I tell him I’m scared about it, he is very uplifting. He is helping create a really great environment where I can put all my focus on my classes and do well. It really means a lot to me that he hasn’t given up on this. I really do want to finish school and get a degree. It’s just been so long and I’m so scared I’m going to fail. But this really is a great opportunity for me to go back to school with very few distractions. I don’t have to work or worry about paying bills. Troy is taking care of all of that. I won’t have tons of household responsibilities because Troy is also making sure that gets taken care of. What better time than this to get it together and go back to school? I’m scared, but I’m also optimistic because the situation I’m in right now has been set up for me to succeed. Troy is encouraging, my parents are encouraging and my siblings are encouraging. They all believe in me and that means the world to me. So, I am going to face my fears and get this thing done. College, here I come!
