Well, as of February 16, 2013, Dixie State College is now Dixie State University. That means I’m now attending a University!
It’s funny, my brother, sister and I have all gone to the same school, but my sister got a degree from Dixie College, my brother got a degree from Dixie State College and it looks like I’m going to get a degree from Dixie State University. I wonder if that will still be the name when I graduate in two years. haha
I was curious just barely and looked up the history of Dixie and found that it’s actually had several names since it was first established.
- 1911 – Dixie Stake Academy
- 1916 – Dixie Normal College (seriously?)
- 1923 – Dixie Junior College
- 1970 – Dixie College
- 2000 – Dixie State College of Utah
- 2013 – Dixie State University
From what I’ve read in articles, there seems to be some controversy about the legitimacy of the school being a university. Some people are arguing that since Dixie does not award graduate degrees that the school does not qualify as a university. That makes me wonder if there are plans to add more degree programs to Dixie. That would be awesome. I probably won’t stay at Dixie past my Associate’s, but it would still be nice to have the option in case I decide I’d like to stay there longer. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
For now, though, I’m going to a university!
The quality of some teachers need to improve for it to really be a university. i bet they add new programs because they did after it became the State College.
Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. They want to compete more on the national level when it comes to education and they want to bring in more students, so they’ll need to add more degree programs to accomplish that. Maybe they’ll add a Russian studies program! Ooooooh!
