We made it! We’re in China! How exciting! I’ve wanted to come here for so long and it hasn’t quite sunk in that we’re really here.
Sometimes this whole thing of living in Malaysia doesn’t quite seem real. I mean, who does that? Who gives up a good job, an apartment they can afford and all their stuff to move halfway across the world with a guy they just started dating? Crazy people. That’s who. Crazy people.
In keeping with something strange happening in every country we go to, when we were looking for a SIM card, this guy approached us and asked us if we wanted a taxi. So, Troy began negotiating. It’s fun watching Troy joke with people and be all politiciany when he is making deals. Most people respond pretty well. Tonight, this guy started at 500RMB for the ride to our hotel and within minutes Troy had him down to 200RMB. He was trying for 150 and after a bit longer the guy was down to 180. After trying to get the guy to go lower, we finally agreed to pay 180 and off we went to the taxi.
Or so we thought.
I started getting a little nervous when the guy led us out past all the taxis and into this back parking lot. As we kept walking further away, I began thinking this guy may not be a taxi driver.
And he wasn’t.
I told Troy as we were walking that I didn’t really want to go with him if he want a taxi driver. When we got to his car, I told Troy I didn’t like the idea of just driving off with a total stranger and he turned to the guy and started asking if he was a taxi driver.
After some back and forth, the guy finally told us he wasn’t a taxi driver, but we should still go with him. He even told me I was beautiful and should get in his car. Lol. Troy told the guy no and that I was scared. As the guy kept tying to convince us that we should go with him, Troy just kept saying no and we walked away. I was really happy Troy didn’t give me any crap or try to convince me to just get in the car. He just turned and told the guy no. It made me feel good that he just listened and didn’t complain.
After standing in line for about 5 min, we got in a REAL taxi and got to our hotel. The price? 61RMB. That guy was totally trying to rip us off!
But, we’re here and we made it safely to our hotel. And now I’m going to take some pictures of our room. It’s going to be an interesting few days.
Erin can’t blog while she is in China. They won’t allow it.
Wait, my Made It To China blog posted? It said there was a network error and that the page (wordpress) is blocked when I tried to post it. Apparently, it still works. Somehow.
